Role of dietary fats in Prostate Cancer
Since ethical investigations into the role of single or combined risk factors in prostate cancer are difficult in humans, our novel mice will be placed on n-6-, n-3- or saturated-fat-modified diets (implemented either at weaning - approximately 3 weeks of age - or at 6 months of age). Hypothesis: Dietary exposure to high levels of saturated fat (lard) or n-6 poly-unsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) increases the risk of prostate cancer while exposure to an n-3 PUFA enriched diet reduces cancer risk. In combination with longitudinal magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and MR spectroscopy (MRS) in vivo experiments and ex vivo and in vitro mechanistic investigations, will investigate the role of exogenous dietary risk factors on prostate cancer. These experiments will ultimately be of enormous benefit to the study of the etiology of prostate disease.
